Limited Editions

Late Summer in the Mearns is a fine art print which was published in a limited edition of 500 in 1998.

The view is from the Garvock Hill looking North and West towards the Grampians. A group of trees clustering around some farm buildings forms a focal point. From here, the eye is drawn across the broad sweep of the Howe of the Mearns – a rolling landscape of field patterns punctuated by more lines of dark trees. Harvest fields shimmer in the heat of a cloudless late summer’s afternoon. In the foreground, dried grasses, their seed-heads waving in the soft breeze, border a cut field: a poignant reminder of Autumn days to come.

Developed from a watercolour completed in August, 1997, and measuring 54 x 39 cm, Late Summer in the Mearns is printed on 250 gsm silk art paper. Each copy is numbered and signed. The printers, Halcon Ltd of Stonehaven, have an established reputation as specialists in producing fine art prints.

Across the Howe Towards Glen Esk, produced in a limited edition of 300, captures the Howe of the Mearns in early Summer. The view is from the Garvock Hill – a spot known locally as the ‘Three-Cornered Woodie’ – looking West over the Howe towards Laurencekirk and Fettercairn.

In the foreground, a tangle of roadside plants stands before fields of ripening barley as the land falls away down the Garvock. In the middle distance, familiar field patterns – so characteristic of the Mearns at this time of year – are present. Fields of drying rape and uncut grass contrast with the lighter tones of wheat and barley in a landscape punctuated by dark lines of trees. In the middle distance Denlethen – a wooded area which features in most of my Winter landscapes.

At the heart of this composition is a strong sense of place and a sense that the Grampians mark the beginning of a landscape that is essentially Highland and quite different from the Howe.
